Surfing the coast of San Juan La Union Philippines

Riding the wave is becoming popular to many Filipinos.  In fact, there are many rising surfing points in the Philippines. From the Siargo as the the surfing capital of the Philippines to Baler, Aurora, Catanduanes, Zambales and even Ilocos. Do not also miss out on the famous San Juan La Union, the nearest surfing destination to my beloved Baguio City - just a 2-hour drive from Baguio or about 8 km. from Manila.

As this is a very interesting and self-fulfilling water sport, why not bring your friends in San Juan! The 9 of us rented a van for PhP 3,500 going to San Juan, not bad because we had a lot of side trips.

Checking in at San Juan Surf School established in 2003 by Filipino-Australian surfer Luke Landrigan, was a good choice - decent and affordable.  For a maximum of 4 ( or even 5) per room, you'll get a good sleep at a price of PhP 2,400 (check their page for updated rates at www.sanjuansurfschool.ph). Their standard room is not bad, considering that we are here for the surfing activity and not for an elegant room. If you want to enjoy a better accommodation, Kahuna is just a couple of blocks away.

Surfing seems so easy. At PhP 400.00 for one hour, you have an instructor and a board! Even while they were giving us surfing 101, I already said to myself: this will be as easy as it looks! But when time came to surf -- my gosh!, it is not what I thought it would be.  Balancing the board on something fluid is far different from a skate board. But what the heck, I'm already here! :)

The instructor gave us three simple steps:
1.)Lie on the board with both hands at chest level like you're going to perform push ups.

2.)Pull your leg towards your hip(the leg that is not tied to the leg rope). This will be the leg that will be at the middle part of the board (deck as they call it).

3.)Push yourself up to a standing position using your hands and your leg. Maintain balance (which is really difficult for me).

The instructor named the parts of the board and lectured to us some basic physics of balancing and controlling the board - that didn't sunk in to my head.  :)

The part where we had the surfing session are good for starters but is a part for more experienced surfers where the waves are bigger and more violent? :)

As an add on to this trip, you may enjoy the view at sundown:
